Boys Soccer A – Coach Campbell
In another highly competitive MRISA soccer tournament the high school boys soccer
team recorded a great win for UNIS A. They started strongly with a 3-0 win
against a physical SSIS side. The first half was fairly even but solid defending
and quick passing eventually broke down the visiting team who conceded an own
goal under pressure. Jakob Laage-Thomsem and Henrik Frederiksen scored the
other goals in a comfortable first match.
The second group game matched UNIS A with VIS. A determined
and energetic team effort made this easily the boys’ strongest performance in
the tournament. Suryo Fuhrke opened the scoring with Rupert Turner-Goldsack
following up with a nicely struck free kick. Tom Swinkles played striker
Henrik Frederiksen through for an impressive third goal that capped a
great display against a VIS side that had started the game strongly.
The semi-final against local rivals HIS was a scrappy affair and UNIS
needed some luck to come through this tie. Ryan Mundy had put hosting
team HIS ahead in the first half with a goal straight from a corner.
UNIS struggled to find their passing game and were closed down well by
a hard working HIS team. However they stuck to their task well and managed
to force a spot kick that Henrik followed up on to score and force the
game into penalty kicks. Goal keeper Jack Griffith made three great saves
and Henrik held his nerve on the crucial kick to put UNIS through to
the final.
International School of Ho Chi Minh City had already booked a place
in the final with a 5-0 thrashing of a tired Saigon South. UNIS though
started the sharper side and were quickly ahead. Suryo Fuhrke who had
been full of running all day nodded in a cross from Val Schmidt on a
rare foray forward. UNIS were soon two ahead when Rupert Turner-Goldsack
finished a great move with a volley, a goal he fully deserved after the
hard work and endeavour he had put in throughout the tournament. UNIS
should have sealed the match when Tom Swinkles and Suryo again opened
up the ISHMC defence with a neat interchange but they couldn’t
quite put the ball in the net. ISHMC then punished UNIS’s profligacy
when Jakub Kur scored a great individual goal and quickly set up an equalizer.
The crowd seemed happy with the prospect of penalty kicks; a feeling
not shared by the nervous UNIS coaches. Jack Griffith, Suryo and Henrik
were again the heroes for UNIS. Jack made three great saves and Henrik
scored the winner after Suryo had put the home team in front.
This tournament, like all MRISA events, was played in a great spirit
which was evident when after scoring the winning penalty kick the UNIS
boys went straight over to shake hands with the disappointed ISHMC players.
Thanks also to the students, parents and teachers that came to watch.
Please continue to support us all the soccer teams at UNIS as they aim
to continue their successful season.
The UNIS coaches and players would like to wish Yoo Hyun Ko the very
best of luck as he leaves us at the end of this week to go back to Korea.
He has been a key player in many UNIS teams and was rightly awarded an
ALLSTAR award for his strong showing in defence and midfield this weekend.
We are very sad to be loosing one of our hardest working and talented
players.
Boys Soccer B – Coach Thompson
As the only B team in the tournament, and made up largely of Grade 9
students, these boys were regarded by many as the underdogs. However, they
did not behave like underdogs and threw themselves into their first game
against ISHCMC (last years champions) narrowly losing 2-1. In their next
match against HIS, they came back from one goal down to level the score,
and in their final match they beat VIS on penalties. As a young, relatively
inexperienced team they showed great promise and character - watch out for
them in the future!
Girls Soccer A and B – Coach Phi
1st and 2nd place against 4 other schools – what an AWESOME RESULT! Coach
Phi would like to thank all the girls for their effort and determination on
the day. Who would have thought that the B team would have beaten the A team
in the final? – sport can be full of suprises!
Co-Ed Softball
Coach
Connors and Otto
The UNIS softball teams have had a good season of practice and skill
building. We had great participation with almost 50 students per practice
and more than we could take for the MRISA sports exchange. Our MRISA athletes
played hard throughout the exchange and finished fourth and sixth. Our softball
results were better than at the last High School sports exchange and our
program continues to improve as we grow.
