Activities

Learning at UNIS takes place both in and out of the classroom. From spending a night in a stilt house in an ethnic minority village to touring the ancient city of Hue, students in Grades 5 through 12 take full advantage of the natural splendor and rich culture of Vietnam and complement their studies with field trips around the country. Field trips and activities in and around Hanoi are included in the programmes at all grade levels, whether these are painting locally-made ceramics at nearby Bat Trang pottery village, stepping into the past to experience a Medieval tournament, or participating as delegates in a Model United Nations debate.

Sports and cultural exchanges are conducted with other international schools in the region, and tournaments are held regularly within the school. Swimming, basketball, soccer, volleyball, tennis and athletics form the basis of the sports calendar. Tae Kwon Do, table tennis, gymnastics, ballet, drama, computing, calligraphy, batik, silk screening, sewing and Wolf Cubs are just a few of the after-school activities in which students take part five afternoons a week.

Active student councils at all three levels of the school provide more opportunities for students to be involved while developing leadership and organizational skills. The Middle School and High School Student Councils organize social functions throughout the year and also raise funds for local charities. A popular event is the annual student-run carnival to which children from a local orphanage are invited to join in the fun with UNIS students. The Elementary School Student Council runs a video-lending library for UNIS families, and organizes recreational and social events.

United Nations Day is always a colourful event at UNIS with students and teachers in their national dress and parents providing traditional foods from their countries to share at an international lunch. Along with an annual International Food Fair and several school concerts throughout the year, these provide opportunities for us to celebrate both our cultural diversity and our unity as UNIS families.
